SOUR PATCH KIDS x CAT IN THE HAT MOVIE

CONCEPT PACKAGE DESIGN

FINAL DESIGN:

    DESIGN BRIEF:

Design a 2026 limited edition package for Sour Patch Kids and a form of media. The package must feature the logo, nutritional facts, and a call to action. You can create a unique flavor, change the products shape, etc. but must recognize potential size limitations. You may consider additional plus ups with the packaging that enhance your reasoning for the collaboration.

    RESEARCH:

    Existing Package Designs

I started by analyzing limited edition packaging for Sour Patch Kids and studying the brand guidelines. There was a strong focus on mischievous Kids with a playful, rebellious spirit. Here are my key element sparknotes:

    • Relatively flexible branding for limited edition packaging compared to best sellers but it must include: the stacked logo mockup, one Kid that is proportionate to the logo size, flavor profile, and “Sour Then Sweet” Tagline
    • Some Kids have situational props to further incorporate the special edition design

    The Narrative

    What’s the Story?
    • The “big red wood box” contains Thing 1 & Thing 2
    • In the movie, the red box unleashes into Dr. Seuss’ world, and he says it “mixes your world and my world”
    • The Cat in the Hat steps into the world of Sour Patch Kids revealing the collaboration

    How is it communicated?
    • Thing 1 and Thing 2 (Sour Patch Kid version) pop out of Dr. Seuss’ red crate revealing The Cat in the Hat x SPK world
    • The background needs to link directly to Cat in the Hat – has to be immediately noticeable
    • Add things that resemble movement and the whimsical world of imagination
    • Maybe pink splatter on top instead of SPK splatter to tie back to movie?
    • Target audience: Kids like Sally and her brother
